The Most Important Pre-Care Step: Shave 24 Hours Before

Shaving the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment is the single most important pre-care step. Here is why: the laser targets the pigment in the hair follicle root — not the surface hair. When you shave, the laser energy goes directly to the follicle instead of being wasted on hair above the skin surface. This makes the treatment more effective and more comfortable.

Shave timing: 24 hours before is ideal. The night before works well. Do NOT shave immediately before your appointment — freshly shaved skin is more sensitive. Do NOT wax or tweeze — these remove the follicle root the laser needs to target.

Complete Pre-Care Checklist

Complete all of these steps before every laser hair removal session:

01
Shave the Area
Shave 24 hours before your appointment. No waxing or tweezing for at least 4 weeks before any session.
02
Avoid Sun & Tanning
No sunbathing, tanning beds, or self-tanner for 2 weeks before your session. Tanned skin increases burn risk.
03
Clean Skin Only
Arrive with clean skin — no lotion, deodorant, perfume, makeup, or oils on the treatment area.
04
Wear Loose Clothing
Wear or bring loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access and won’t rub the treated area afterward.
05
Hydrate
Drink plenty of water in the 24–48 hours before your session. Hydrated skin responds better to laser treatment.
06
Skip the Gym
Avoid heavy exercise on the day of your appointment. High body temperature and sweating can affect results.

What To Avoid Before Laser Hair Removal

⚠️ Do NOT do any of the following before your session:

4 Weeks Before

  • ✦ Wax, thread, or tweeze the treatment area
  • ✦ Use depilatory creams (Nair, Veet, etc.)
  • ✦ Any treatment that removes hair at the root

2 Weeks Before

  • ✦ Sunbathing or tanning beds
  • ✦ Self-tanner or spray tan
  • ✦ Chemical peels near the area
  • ✦ Retinol products on the treatment area

Day of Appointment

  • ✦ Apply lotion, deodorant, or perfume to the area
  • ✦ Take ibuprofen or aspirin (use acetaminophen if needed)
  • ✦ Drink alcohol (increases skin sensitivity)
  • ✦ Apply numbing cream without technician guidance

Conditions To Disclose Before Your Session

Please notify your iBeauty technician if any of the following apply. Some conditions require adjustments or may temporarily affect your eligibility for treatment:

Recent Tan or Sunburn
Tanned or sunburned skin must be avoided. We may reschedule if the area is too dark or irritated.
Active Skin Condition
Open sores, active cold sores, eczema flare-ups, or skin infections in the area require rescheduling until healed.
Pregnancy or Breastfeeding
Laser hair removal is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. We will be happy to reschedule when it is safe.
Photosensitizing Medications
Certain antibiotics, acne medications (Accutane), and some supplements increase skin sensitivity. Always disclose current medications.
Hormonal Conditions
PCOS and other hormonal conditions can affect how many sessions you need. Let us know so we can set the right expectations.
History of Keloid Scarring
If you have a history of keloids, please inform us. We will recommend a test patch before proceeding with full treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions — Pre-Care

Do I need to shave before laser hair removal?

Yes — shaving 24 hours before your session is required. It directs the laser energy to the follicle root under the skin rather than the hair above it, making treatment more effective and more comfortable. Do not wax or tweeze.

Can I use numbing cream before my appointment?

Do not apply numbing cream without first checking with your technician. If you would like to use it, we will tell you exactly which product to use and how to apply it. Improper application can cause uneven laser absorption.

What if I forgot to shave before my appointment?

Contact us as soon as possible. In most cases we can shave the area at the studio, though this may affect your appointment time. It is better to reschedule than to treat without proper preparation.

Can I come tanned to my laser hair removal session?

No — tanned skin (from sun, tanning beds, or self-tanner) significantly increases the risk of burns and pigmentation changes. We will assess your skin at each appointment and may reschedule if there is a recent tan.

Can I put on deodorant before my underarm treatment?

No — arrive with clean, product-free skin. Deodorant, perfume, and antiperspirants must be fully washed off before underarm laser treatment. Residue can react with the laser and cause irritation.
